Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He grew up on a peanut farm and studied at the United States Naval Academy.
Carter served in the United States Navy, both on submarines and as a naval officer. He left the military in 1953 to return to Plains and take over the family peanut business.
Carter began his political career as a member of the Georgia State Senate. He later became the governor of Georgia, serving from 1971 to 1975.
